Connect to HMRC
Before you can send a quarterly update, add your National Insurance number under Taxes → Tax settings, then go to Taxes → Making Tax Digital and choose Connect to HMRC.
You'll be taken to HMRC's own sign-in page to authorise BusyBee Hub. Once you're back, we check the businesses HMRC has on record for you (your self-employment, your UK property business, or both) and match them to your BusyBee Hub organisation automatically where there's only one of each. If HMRC lists more than one self-employment, you'll be asked which one this business is.
We also read your Making Tax Digital status for the year from HMRC. If it says "MTD Mandated" or "MTD Voluntary", HMRC expects quarterly updates; "Annual" means only a Final Declaration is expected; if the page says the National Insurance number isn't signed up yet, follow the link to GOV.UK to sign up first.
Your authorisation lasts up to 18 months before HMRC asks you to reconnect. You can disconnect at any time from the same page; this doesn't cancel anything already sent to HMRC, and you can reconnect whenever you're ready.
The same connection covers VAT. Authorisations made before VAT returns were available cover Income Tax only; the VAT returns page asks you to reconnect once to add VAT.
